This is a book about the Whig Party by Michael F Holt that I recommend reading if you are interested in the evolution of banking and currency in the US in the early to mid 19th century. There are plenty of books about the history of banking specifically, but I really like this particular book because it provides rich political context while providing enough detail about banking law to be informative that I have not found in any other. It’s a bit of a tough read, however; being the result of 20 years of work it reads more like essay form, so there is quite of bit of repetition of ideas.
