I am going to do something different tonight. I am promising to not make a strawman to punch the daylights out of regarding whatever Obama might have to say about the Iraqi/Syrian crisis. I’ve written some about what I think about the situation here, and not much has changed.

Some things I would like to know about how the events unfolded, I am certain he won’t answer in his speech, but I’ll be watching it anyway.

One thing that has peaked my curiosity is why, when the news of goings on in Iraq finally hit the media state-side, did the administration try to minimize it by telling us IS was only an Iraqi Sunni insurgency that was to be laid at the feet of Maliki? Obviously IS didn’t appear out of thin air with the logistical capability to move hordes of light infantry to sweep Iraq by storm.

I found a video of a “sermon” given by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of IS, that demonstrates exactly who these IS people are, what they believe and what they want that was made just as the administration was minimizing. It’s rather ugly, but straight to the point. I made a post about it that I have not yet posted, but I am inserting in this post below.

———————————–

I watched the video and had trouble keeping up with the subtitles, not reading them, but trying to comprehend both the substance and context. So I went back and paused it, transcribing the “sermon” on my word processor as it went along, which I am providing at the bottom of this post.

I can’t particularly vouch for the quality of the translation. I noticed what appeared to be a few breaks where some thoughts aren’t completed before moving on to the next sentence or paragraph, many of which coincide with much longer spoken sentences. I believe these are indeed breaks in the translation rather than rambling, incomplete thoughts on the part of al-Baghdadi.

This sermon appears to be politics mixed with religion. He talks about the points that make Ramadhan special for Muslims in the beginning, moving on to the importance of establishing the caliphate to Muslims, the burden of leadership, what he expects from his followers and what they can expect from him, and then closes with what I believe would be the equivalent of a prayer in a Christian sermon and blessings to the followers present as they go out and about their day.

Points that stick out to me:

This guy worships death.

  • “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become a limited number of days”

The reason he has a problem with Christians and others is according to his belief they are polytheists, enemies of Allah because Allah is the one and only God who has no partners; no son and no Holy Ghost.

  • “[Ramadhan] A month in which the market of Jihad is established; for the Messenger of Allah used to assign in it the army generals and prepare the army groups to fight the enemies of Allah and to establish Jihad against the Mushrikin”

(Mushrikin are polytheists, infidels, or Muslims subscribing to religious innovation rather than strict interpretation of the Qur’an)

  • “Verily the most truthful of and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. And the worst affairs are newly invented matters. Every newly invented matter is a bid’ah (religious innovation). And every bid’ah is misguidance, and every [break in translation]”

Why the killing?

  • “O Muslims, verily Allah, Blessed and High be He, has created us so we believe in Him alone, worship Him and establish His [break in translation]. Allah the most High [break in translation]. And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship me. And He ordered us, Blessed and Exalted be He, to fight His enemies and set out in Jihad […] in order to achieve that and establish the Religion.”
  •  “Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you and He the most High says: And fight them until there is. O people, verily the Religion of Allah, Blessed and High be He, will not be established and this purpose for which Allah has created us will not be attained except ruling by the law of Allah and legislating to it and establishing the limits (of Allah). This verily will not be except by battle and Allah the most High says: We have already sent our messengers with clear evidences and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice. And we sent down iron, wherein is great [break in translation] and so the Allah my make evident those who support Him and His messengers unseen
  • “Verily this is the principle or Religion; a Book that guides and sword that aids victory.”

If I ever had any doubts about what I’ve been told this problem of “radical Islam” is, they certainly would have been dispelled. But since I didn’t harbor much doubt, this goes only to confirm what I’ve been told. Only it is much worse than what people state-side have been told because there is no honor and plenty of hypocrisy in the IS movement.

The first one is that even Muhammad did not kill everyone who did not convert. They were given a choice to convert, or pay a tax and submit to Islamic law or be killed. Of course by today’s standards those choices are still rather brutish. But it was not black or white, become a fundamentalist or die.

The next one is that they are killing children. Al Jazera reported about a week ago that a nine year-old was strangled with a rope and her corpse was dragged around the city square by the very rope she was strangled with. There are also several videos of IS fighters driving around city streets, pulling up beside motorists as they are traveling down the street and indiscriminately shooting into the vehicles, killing them.

Then there is a problem with al-Baghdadi himself. The caliph is supposed to be elected by the counsel, representatives of “the people.” He can also be removed by that same council if found disobedient, inept, or ineffective in providing for the people. And of course areas under the control of IS are pretty much brutal, lawless hinterlands amid reports that al-Baghdadi dissenters have been eliminated. Thus the battle with Nursa that prevents the rebellion in Syria from being able to overcome the Assad regime.

I suppose that what we’re seeing here is a Sunni brand of the Iranian Revolution. As often is the case, a revolution is started by people who have simply had enough of the status quo. Then they are co-opted by unsavory opportunists in the power vacuum. It happened in France, Iran, and more recently Egypt, among other places. It happened to the Occupy movement. It happened to the Tea Party. Forces that could not gain traction any other way slip in and change the original intention to suit themselves.

As far as I can tell, there isn’t much controversy state-side about what the United States should do about the IS problem in particular. My own opinion is that we should have had the warthogs (A-10 gunships) ready and waiting for IS to cross the border into Iraq.

But a more important point, however, is that this IS movement didn’t just appear out of thin air. The logistics required to move a large enough force of light infantry into Iraq to take over large swaths of the northern part of the country in a matter of weeks I would think to be enormous. And I find it rather strange for the Obama Administration to have been taken by surprise by the developments in Iraq over the summer.

The administration didn’t even have the story straight when finally pushed to acknowledge that the situation in Iraq was careening out of control. It said IS was Iraqi Sunni insurgents, as if it were the same kind of Iraqi political problem the Bush Administration was faced with in 2006-07. I made a post pointing out that these are not Iraqi Sunni insurgents here. I’ve recently heard estimates that upwards of 12,000 of the IS fighters are foreigners, which puts the foreign component of IS to about a third. It also contains about a third Syrian. And so, the idea of these being Iraqi insurgents is a bit off the mark, which I think now has come into plain view. The administration lied about who they are and what they want. If administration officials didn’t know who they were, they should have said so.

As earlier mentioned, there isn’t much controversy here in the states about the problem. I’ve seen some opinion pieces that IS isn’t a threat to the US, and therefore we shouldn’t do anything – not our problem. I don’t entirely disagree with that view. It would be nice to look at it that way and be able to ignore it. The problem, however, is that one cannot prove a negative. IS is likely not a threat to the west – now. It has its hands full with ambition toward conquest and all of the regional political and military issues that come with it.

But once it is somewhat stable it will start thinking about the larger picture, and that where I part ways with my friends who would rather ignore it. Having been in my early thirties when the attacks on the World Trade Center occurred, the black swan event of my generation, that day and how I felt afterward are still very fresh in my mind. I wanted to know how government could be so damned expensive and not serve one of its core obligations – security. I cannot leave the IS problem for my son’s generation to have to clean up. We know enough of what the IS movement is about to have a pretty good idea that it is a matter of when, not if, something like that will happen again. Especially since IS has openly declared war on the US. And since they would likely have taken over actual states, if left unchecked, 9/11 would likely be only a small glimpse of the horrors.

Text of the Translation:

All praise is due Allah, we praise him

We seek his help and forgiveness

And we seek refuge in Allah from the evils within ourselves and consequences of our evil deeds

Whosoever Allah guides none can lead astray

And whosoever Allah {break in translation]

And I bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone and that he has no partner

And I bear withess that Muhammad is his slave and Allah’s blessings upon him and his family and companions, and through his peace be upon them

O you who habe believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice

He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins

And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment as to what follows

Verily the most truthful of and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad

And the worst affairs are newly invented matters.

Every newly invented matter is a bid’ah (religious innovation).

And every bid’ah is misguidance, and every [break in translation]

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become a limited number of days

The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.

So whoever witness the month, let him fast it.

O Muslims verily the occurrence of Ramadhan is a great blessing and bounty from Allah the Most

A month which its beginning is Mercy, its middle is forgiveness and its end is salvation from Hellfire

A month in which he who fasts it out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven

And whoever establishes prayers during its nights out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be

Abu Huraira narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadhan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven

And whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadhan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards all his past sins will be

A month upon its entrance, the doors of Paradise open, the doors of Fire are shut and the devils are [break in translation]

A month in it is a night which is better than a thousand nights, who is deprived of it is verily deprived of all good.

The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of the Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of the dawn.

A month in it are people who Allah saves from hellfire, and that is in each night.

A month in which the market of Jihad is established; for the Messenger of Allah used to assign in it the army generals and prepare the army groups to fight the enemies of Allah and to establish Jihad against the Mushrikin

So grasp the opportunity in this blessed month O servants of Allah in Allah’s obedience; for in it rewards are multiplied.

So for this let the competitors compete.

O Muslims, verily Allah, Blessed and High be He, has created us so we believe in Him alone, worship Him and establish His [break in translation]

Allah the most High [break in translation]

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship me.

And He ordered us, Blessed and Exalted be He, to fight His enemies and set out in Jihad in His in order to achieve that and establish the Religion.

Allah the most High

Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you and He the most High says: And fight them until there is

Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

Verily this is the principle or Religion; a Book that guides and sword that aids victory.

Verily your brothers the Mujahidin, Allah blessed and High be He, has favored them with victory and conquest

And he established for them after long years of Jihad and patience, and meeting in combat with the enemies of Allah, he granted them success, empowered them in order to fulfill their purpose.

Verily the hastened to announce the Caliphate and appointing a leader, and this is an obligation upon Muslims.

An obligation which has been made lost for centuries and was absent upon earth’s existence, and so many Muslims were ignorant of it.

And those who commit sin, where Muslims are sinning by abandoning and neglecting it, for verily they have to always strive to establish it and here now they have established it, praise and favor is due to Allah.

Verily I am in a trial by this great matter. I am in trial by this trust, a heavy-weighted trust.

And so I was put in authority over you, and I am not the best of you nor am I better than you.

If you see me upon truth then support me and guide me and obey me as long as I obey Allah

Verily if I disobey Him then obey me

I am not to promise you as how the kings and rulers promise their followers and their citizens luxury, prosperity, security and wealth but instead I promise you by what Allah, blessed and High be He has promised His believing servants:

Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deed that He will surely grant them succession upon earth just as He granted it to those before them

And that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, they worship Me, not associating anything with Me.

But whoever disbelieves after that – then

Allah the most High said: So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you believer

And He the most High said: If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you.

And He the most High said: And incumbent upon Us was the support of the believers

And He the most High said: And to Allah belongs honor and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know

This is what Allah has promised, for verily if you desire what He has promised then fear Allah and

Fear Allah the Great in every matter and all circumstances

And impose the truth and hold fast to it in that which you love and which you

And if you desire what Allah has promised then set out in Jihad in His and encourage the believers and be patient upon that hardship.

Verily if you were to know what is in Jihad from reward, respect, dignity and honor in this life and the hereafter, then none of you would have stayed or remained behind from Jihad

For it is the transaction which Allah has directed and saved by it from the severest of punishments and followed with it honor in both lives (this and the next)

You believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives.

That is best for you, if you should know He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to the gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in the gardens perpetual.

That is great attainment.

And another that you love- victory from Allah and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers.

I say these words of mine and I ask

Ask Allah and you are certain of being answered.

Praise due to Allah as He should be praised and upon his family, his companions, his party and his

And who follows them in righteousness to the Day of Meeting and Recompense.

There is no God but Allah, alone with no partner. He has fulfilled His Promise, made his slave victorious, and He Alone defeated the clans.

There is no God but Allah, alone with no partner, to Whom we are sincere in devotion even though the unbelievers should hate it.

O servants of Allah, establish your Religion and fear Allah as He [break in translation]

If you desire security, then fear

If you desire provision, then fear Allah.

If you desire a noble life, the fear Allah and set out in Jihad in His cause

We ask Allah the Great, Lord of the Great Throne, that He unifies your word, and makes terms of settlement between you and

O Allah grant honor to Islam and to the Muslims and dishonor polytheism and polytheists, and grant victory to Your servants the Mujahidin the Monotheists in the Eastern ends and the Western ones.

O Allah plan firm their feet and make firm

O Allah guide their throwing and guide their

O Allah prepare for them from their affairs right guidance and make them from Your good aid and assistance

O Allah turner of the hearts, set firm our hearts upon your religion

O Allah who turns hearts, turn our hearts toward Your obedience

O Allah purify our hearts from hypocrisy and our acts from deception (awaiting) and our tongues from lies and our eyes from betrayal

O Allah we ask You sincere belief and a humble submissive heart and acts which are

O Allah we ask pardon and health, and everlasting convalescence in religion and life

O Allah make this gathering of our a gathering of mercy and our dispersion after it a blessed safeguarded dispersion and do not make within us and amongst us an unhappy or deprived person

And the last of our supplication is all praise to Allah Lord of the world and Allah’s peace and blessing upon upon our prophet Muhammad and establish prayer
